A Comprehensive Review on the Anti-Toxic (Agada) and Hepato protective Properties of Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba) in the Management of Cumulative Toxicity (Dushi Visha)

Abstract
Background: In the contemporary era, continuous exposure to environmental pollutants, adulterated foods, and synthetic chemicals mimics the Ayurvedic concept of Dushi Visha (cumulative/latent toxicity). Agada Tantra, the specialized branch of Ayurvedic toxicology, offers profound insights into managing such systemic challenges. Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba), widely celebrated for its Keshya (hair-promoting) properties, is also a potent Vishaghna (anti-toxic) and hepato protective agent. Objective: To systematically review the classical Ayurvedic literature and modern pharmacological studies regarding the efficacy of Bhringaraja in neutralizing toxins and protecting hepatic function. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using classical Ayurvedic texts and modern scientific databases (Scopus, PubMed). Keywords included Agada Tantra, Eclipta alba, Dushi Visha, and hepato protective. Results: Classical texts highlight the Ushna (hot), Tikta (bitter), and Katu (pungent) properties of Bhringaraja, making it highly effective against dosha imbalances caused by toxins, Especially Pitta and kapha. Modern pharmacological data aligns with these classical claims, demonstrating that active phytoconstituents like wedelolactone exhibit significant hepato protective and anti inflammatory effects, effectively mitigating oxidative stress and liver necrosis induced by various hepatotoxins. Conclusion: Bhringaraja serves as a crucial therapeutic agent in Agada Tantra for managing chronic toxicity. Its integration into modern clinical practice as a hepato protective agent warrants further large-scale clinical trials.
