Phytochemical Screening and Evaluation of Haemolytic Potential of Medicinal Plant Withania coagulans Fruit

Abstract
Scientific validation of any medicinal plant for bioactive molecules and their toxicity study is important during drug development. In the present study, phytochemical analysis of Withania coagulans plant fruit methanolic extract reported the presence of major phytochemical groups including alkaloid, carbohydrate, tannin, terpenoid, glycoside, steroid and flavanoid. The haemolytic activity of W. coagulans plant fruit methanolic extract was performed by spectroscopic method at six different concentrations (6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 200 µg/ml). The solvent fractions exhibited very low haemolytic activity towards human erythrocytes. W. coagulans plant fruit extract has showed 22.54% of haemolysis at its highest test concentration (200 µg/ml). Hence, as the haemolysis percentage is very less, W. coagulans plant fruit crude extract could be regarded as safe for human erythrocytes.
