Abstract
The sub-chronic exposure of arsenic is associated with human health risk including renal-toxicity, hepatic-toxicity and neuro-toxicity. The protective efficacy of fruit extract of Emblica-officinalis (amla) was studied in Balb/c mice against arsenic induced renal toxicity.
The study was divided in four groups having five mice in each group. Increased arsenic level in renal tissue associated with enhanced oxidative stress, decrease in the levels of glutathione and activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase was observed in mice exposed to arsenic (sodium arsenite, 3 mg/kg body weight, p.o., 30 days).
Simultaneous treatment of amla (500 mg/kg body weight, p.o., 30 days) and arsenic exposed mice caused an increase antioxidant enzyme and decreases arsenic levels in renal tissue as compared to arsenic treated mice. No significant effect on any of these parameters was observed in mice treated with amla (500 mg/kg body weight, p.o., 30 days) alone compared to controls. A significant protective efficacy in mice simultaneously treated with arsenic and amla suggested the renal protective efficacy of amla.

Key words: Arsenic, oxidative stress, amla, mice
