Sensor-Driven Automated Shirodhara Yantras: Integrating Machine Learning for Precision and Personalized Ayurvedic Neuromodulation Therapy

Anusree D, Nidhin P S, Adwaith S.

Abstract
Introduction: Shirodhara, a traditional Ayurvedic therapy, involves the continuous pouring of therapeutic liquids onto the forehead to promote mental relaxation and stress relief. However, conventional Shirodhara often lacks precision and personalization, limiting its therapeutic effectiveness.
Proposed System: This paper proposes the Automated Shirodhara Yantra (ASY), a smart device designed to modernize Shirodhara therapy. The ASY integrates advanced sensors, including the MLX90614 infrared temperature sensor for precise temperature control, the Grove GSR sensor for skin conductance monitoring, and the MAX30100 pulse oximeter for real-time heart rate and oxygen saturation measurement. Image processing for emotion detection is handled by the Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D435, paired with the NVIDIA Jetson Nano module for real-time facial expression analysis using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B serves as the central controller, managing sensor data, implementing proportional-integral-derivative (PID) algorithms for fluid flow control, and displaying real-time patient data on a 7-inch touch LCD screen. This combination allows for adaptive and personalized Shirodhara therapy, adjusting key parameters in real-time based on the patient’s physiological and emotional state.
Expected Outcomes: The ASY is expected to improve therapeutic consistency, personalization, and patient satisfaction by integrating modern engineering with traditional Ayurvedic principles. Future work will focus on prototype development, clinical trials, and broader applications in integrative healthcare.
Conclusion: The ASY represents a significant step toward enhancing Shirodhara therapy, offering a more precise, personalized, and data-driven approach to traditional Ayurvedic practice.
