Studies on Bioactive Properties of Cissampelos pareira L. (Laghu-patha) in Terms of Antibacterial , Antioxidant Activities and Phytochemical Constituents

Abstract
Cissampelos pareira L. (Ayurveda: Ambastha, Laghu-patha, Hindi: Batindu, Akanadi) is a medicinal plant used in the treatment of fever, asthma, vomiting, diarrhoea, burning sensation, skin rashes, inflammation etc. by some local healers of Himachal Pradesh. In the presented work, antibacterial, antioxidant potentials and phytochemical constituents of acetone and methanol extracts of C. pareira (leaves and stems) were assessed. Results revealed the highest antibacterial efficacy of acetone leaf extract with inhibition zone of 22.53 mm against Staphylococcus aureus by using the Agar well diffusion method. Methanol leaf extract of C. pareira displayed maximum antioxidant potential with IC50 value of 37.414 µg/mL in the DPPH free radical assay. In reducing power assay, the acetone stem extract of C. pareira exhibited the least EC-value of 360.14 µg/mL, evinced its higher antioxidant potential. Phytochemical analysis by GC-MS revealed the presence of more than 15 phytochemicals.
