“A Comparative Clinical Study on Guduchibhadramustadi Lekhana Basti and Guduchibhadramustadi Ghan Vati in the management of Sthoulya w.s.r. to Obesity”

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background:
Obesity is a disease in which increase in body weight to height out of proportion, mainly due to deposition of fat. Hence there is need to find out effective Ayurvedic formulation and procedure to treat Sthoulya (obesity). The primary aim of this study was to assess and compare the efficacy of Guduchibhadramustadi Lekhana Basti and Guduchibhadramustadi Ghan Vati in the management of Sthoulya (Obesity).
Material and Method:
30 patients were enrolled in this study and were randomly allocated into two groups of 15 patients in each. Guduchibhadramustadi Lekhana Basti (GLB) (emaciated medicated enema) was administered in one group as Kala Basti manner for 16 days in a dose of 420ml/ Basti, with Anuvasana Basti (Triphladi Taila) in the dose of 60 ml (i.e. 1 Anuvasana Basti in the beginning and 3 at the end with 6 Anuvasana Basti & 6 Niruha Basti on alternate days was administered), while in another group Guduchibhadramustadi Ghan Vati (GGV) (oral tablet) in dose of 500 mg twice a day along with Triphala kwatha (Triphala decoction) of 40 ml twice a day for 16 days was given. Last Follow up was done after 32 days of treatment.
Outcome assessment:
Reduction in weight (Kg) was the primary outcome and B.M.I, chest Circumference, waist-hip ratio were the secondary outcomes.
Result:
No drop-out was noticed in the study. 4.60% relief was found in weight in GLB group whereas 2.27% relief was obtained in GGV Group. 4.90% relief was found in GLB group in BMI, whereas 1.43% relief was obtained in GGV Group. In Chest circumference 3.13% relief was found in GLB group whereas 0.36% relief was obtained in GGV Group. In waist-hip ratio1.73% relief was found in GLB group whereas1.20% relief was obtained in GGV Group. In inter group comparison weight, BMI, chest circumference was significant and waist-hip ratio was non-significant.
Conclusion:
It was concluded that Guduchibhadramustadi Lekhana Basti (emaciated medicated enema) is providing better result in weight (Kg), B.M.I, chest Circumference, waist-hip ratio than Guduchibhadramustadi Ghan Vati.
