Prameha-Hara Yogas ( Anti diabetic formulations) in Bhishajya Ratnavali and their Utility

Abstract
Ayurveda considers Prameha, as a disease of Medadhatu (Body Fats) with additional derangement in Kleda, Rasadhatu, Raktadhatu, Majja, Shukra etc. Ayurvedic line of treatment starts from correction of Kleda and dushta Medadhatu. Prameha is further classified into 20 varieties based on physical abnormalities of urine. One of its varieties, Madhumeha can be regarded as Diabetes Mellitus. To understand the varied management principles and medications that can be used to manage the Prameha, a detailed review was done on Bhaisajyaratnavali. It is a unique classical text book of Ayurveda, which gives a complete picture of Ayurveda pharmaceutics. This Materia medica was written by Shri Govind Das in-19th century AD. This study presents literary review on Prameha-harayogas mentioned in Bhaisajaya Ratnavali emphasizing on its practical utility. All the 3456 formulations from 106 chapters of the text were searched for Phalashruthi of ?Prameha?. Out of which 365 plant, animal and mineral origin formulations were indicated in Prameha. Next to Prameha chikitsadhyaya (29.04%), most Pramehahara yogas are mentioned in Grahani Chikitsa (4.93%). Most of the drugs mentioned are Kashaya, Tikta, Madhura Rasa Pradhana. It was hypothesized that Yogas mainly acts as srotoshodhaka, agnidipaka. Thereby correcting the dhatu shaithilya and bahutwa of kapha, kleda and bahu abaddhatwa of medadi dhatus. This comprehensive review gives a detailed description of all the formulations indicated in Prameha, which will be helpful for the physicians and researchers for further usage.
