A Preliminary Pharmacognostical and Pharmaceutical Evaluation of Bala Chaturbhadra Avaleha

Abstract
Aims: Balachaturbhadra Avaleha has been prepared and studied for its pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical parameters.
The adopted formulation is based on Balachaturbhadra Churna of Chakradatta. Though Balachaturbhadra Churna has
significant efficacy in pediatric disorders it has a few difficulties as a medicament like non acceptability by children,
lower shelf life, bitter taste etc. Considering these inconveniences the composition has been converted to Balachaturbhadra
Avaleha.Methods and Material: The present study provides details of preparation of Balachaturbhadra Avaleha and
methods employed in pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical parameters. Results: Pharmacognostical and phytochemistry
observations revealed the specific characters of all active constituents used in the preparation which indicated authenticity
of raw drugs. Starch grain cells, calcium oxalate, tannin and fibres were the characteristic features observed in microscopic
study of the formulation. The phyto-chemical evaluation of Balachaturbhadra Avaleha shows that the presence of
carbohydrates, steroids, cardiac glycosides and flavanoids. The preliminary HPTLC study of the compound reveals the
components are more sensitive to short UV 254nm having 15 spots compared to long UV 366nm with 09 spots. Conclusions:
Evaluation of Balachaturbhadra Avaleha can be used as a reference standard for further quality control researches for
manufacturing and processing of Balachaturbhadra Avaleha.
